Join the Spokane Riverkeeper to learn about the results of this year’s Community Science Study. Over the course of the year over 35 volunteers took more than 500 water samples and associated data that show the extent of sediment pollution in the Spokane River from Hangman Creek. You’ll learn about this year’s study results and how volunteer data can be used to support policy decisions.

We’ll be joined by students and professors from Gonzaga who analyzed our water samples for other important parameters such as phosphorous.

Over the past year, Dr. Mathews, Dr. Andrade, & Dr. D'Souza at Gonzaga University have worked with citizen scientists and undergraduate students to monitor and analyze water quality trends in two key Spokane River tributaries: Hangman (Latah) Creek, and the Little Spokane River. Weekly samples were collected, filtered, and analyzed for water quality (major anions, alkalinity, total phosphorus, major and trace metals), pollutants like glyphosate, as well as potential fish pathogens like Aeromonas spp. Their results so far demonstrate chemical differences between the two tributaries, as well as seasonal changes for parameters like alkalinity and the presence of glyphosate in the water. Ongoing efforts are geared towards examining the relationship between the environmental parameters and microbes at these locations.
